Dear Fairwood Families,
Report cards for first semester will be posted into Skyward Family Access on Monday February 2nd. If you would like a paper copy of your students' report card, please contact our office.
Parent-Teacher conferences are the week of February 9-13. Teachers have put a message in Rooms with the link to sign up for conferences. If you cannot access the link, please contact your child's teacher. It is crucial to support your child's learning by attending this conference. You can attend in-person, virtually through Microsoft Teams, or by phone. Just let the teacher know what works for you.
Student attendance at school is an ongoing concern. As of this newsletter, 30% of our students have been chronically absent this year. That means 3 of every 10 students has missed more than 10 days of school so far this year and many have missed more than double that many days in the first 90 days of school. Our students who are absent chronically also have the highest rates of below level academic skills. We cannot prevent illness causing students to miss school, but we also cannot easily make up the time that students miss. So, please, if your student is not ill, send them to school. We love learning, we love our students, and we love having them at school!
Students overall are showing progress toward our academic goals in reading and math. On our most recent iReady diagnostic we saw a 18% improvement in the percentage of students on level in math and an 11% improvement on level in reading. Go Chargers!!
We continue to also focus on providing social-emotional learning support to all students through classroom instruction, schoolwide expectations and incentives, and our monthly Charger Champions program. February's Charger Champions program will focus on supporting students in learning Conflict Resolution skills.
Kent School District guidance and immigration resource for families can be found on our district website. This webpage has a lot of useful information and resources and also outlines how schools would respond in the event that immigration services came to schools. Please know that schools are closed campuses and that our staff have been directed to contact the Superintendents' office immediately if government immigration staff ever arrive at school. Please review the parking lot safety reminders later in this newsletter. Our bus drivers have reported concerns with the bus loop being blocked and the roads into Fairwood being blocked. Please go around the block if the pick-up line is extending into the street so the busses can get by. Student safety is our first priority.
Valentine's day, President's day and mid-winter break are coming soon. I hope you enjoy family time together. Thank you all for everything you do to support your children! Our Fairwood families are amazing!
Warmly,
Tricia Hoyle, Principal
