Message from Principal Hoyle

Dear Fairwood Families,

Report cards for first semester will be posted into Skyward Family Access on Monday February 2nd. If you would like a paper copy of your students' report card, please contact our office.

Parent-Teacher conferences are the week of February 9-13. Teachers have put a message in Rooms with the link to sign up for conferences. If you cannot access the link, please contact your child's teacher. It is crucial to support your child's learning by attending this conference. You can attend in-person, virtually through Microsoft Teams, or by phone. Just let the teacher know what works for you.

Student attendance at school is an ongoing concern. As of this newsletter, 30% of our students have been chronically absent this year. That means 3 of every 10 students has missed more than 10 days of school so far this year and many have missed more than double that many days in the first 90 days of school.  Our students who are absent chronically also have the highest rates of below level academic skills. We cannot prevent illness causing students to miss school, but we also cannot easily make up the time that students miss. So, please, if your student is not ill, send them to school. We love learning, we love our students, and we love having them at school!

Students overall are showing progress toward our academic goals in reading and math. On our most recent iReady diagnostic we saw a 18% improvement in the percentage of students on level in math and an 11% improvement on level in reading. Go Chargers!!

We continue to also focus on providing social-emotional learning support to all students through classroom instruction, schoolwide expectations and incentives, and our monthly Charger Champions program. February's Charger Champions program will focus on supporting students in learning Conflict Resolution skills.

Kent School District guidance and immigration resource for families can be found on our district website. This webpage has a lot of useful information and resources and also outlines how schools would respond in the event that immigration services came to schools. Please know that schools are closed campuses and that our staff have been directed to contact the Superintendents' office immediately if government immigration staff ever arrive at school. Please review the parking lot safety reminders later in this newsletter. Our bus drivers have reported concerns with the bus loop being blocked and the roads into Fairwood being blocked. Please go around the block if the pick-up line is extending into the street so the busses can get by. Student safety is our first priority.

Valentine's day, President's day and mid-winter break are coming soon. I hope you enjoy family time together. Thank you all for everything you do to support your children! Our Fairwood families are amazing!

Warmly,

Tricia Hoyle, Principal

Fairwood Corner

Thank you for donating to our Food and Sock Drive

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the teachers, students, staff, and families who generously supported our recent food and sock drive. Your contributions made a meaningful difference for our community. A special shout-out goes to our incredible student leaders, who worked tirelessly to pick up, sort, and count the donated items with enthusiasm and care.
Thanks to everyone’s efforts, the school now has a food pantry that we hope to keep going with the continued support of our community. During school breaks, we are able to provide food for multiple families to ensure they have enough to get through the weekend. Together, we can make sure the pantry stays filled and available for families who need it most, therefore non-perishable food and toiletries are always welcome.

Fairwood Elementary Clothing Bank

"We’re excited to share that the FW Clothing Bank is officially open! A heartfelt thank you to the parent volunteers and staff who have worked tirelessly since last year to bring this resource to life. Your dedication made this possible."

The FW Clothing Bank is located in the portable. If you need to pick up any items, please stop by the main office and we will gladly open the room for you. If you are unable to come during school hours and need to schedule a visit, please reach out to us and we will be happy to arrange a time.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact our Family Liaison, Ithzel Moreno at 253-372-2367 or Ithzel.MorenoRomo@kent.k12.wa.us"

Parking Lot Safety

We have had some safety concerns with our parking lots. Please follow info below.

Front parking lot: For buses, daycare vans, and visitor parking only. Not for student drop- off/pick-up.

Lower north parking lot: For staff, disabled and preschool parking only. If students are walking, they need to stay on the sidewalk and not cut into the lot.

South parking lot (Kiss 'N Drop): For drop-off/pick-up. Please remember that the red area is for LOAD only. If your child is not at the sidewalk, please wait in line. We have had kids who have run out to cars because cars are not able to go to the curb for pick up.

Please see the Kiss 'N Drop map. If everyone follows the rules, it will move a lot more quickly.

Now that the weather is changing. We have limited amounts of clothing in the health room, please pack a change of clothes in your child's backpack if they get wet or muddy during recess. Please make sure your child brings a coat to school as we will be going out to recess rain or shine.
