PIONEER NEWS January 2025

Principal's Message

Hello Meeker Families,

Happy New Year! The start of a new calendar year marks the time when first semester is approaching closure for Meeker students. There are just a few short weeks to make one final push to change or improve grades before January 28, 2025. I would encourage you to keep an extra close eye on your student’s grade by regularly checking Qmlativ Family Access and canvas. A reminder that official grades are posted in Qmlativ. Canvas is the learning platform and not all assignments/activities such as presentation grades are in canvas. Canvas grades may not match Qmlativ grades for that reason. I would encourage you to work with your students’ teachers to develop an immediate plan for getting all make-up work in before grades are due. Reminder that we offer after school Academic Support programs. Let’s make these final few weeks of the semester something we can all look back on with pride and a sense of accomplishment.

Winter iReady assessment is scheduled for the January 9th and 10th. We will be using the data from the fall assessment in comparison with the winter assessment to identify targeted supports for students off grade level as well as to assist with next year registration. In addition, we plan to celebrate students who demonstrate growth.  It is important for your student to be prepared for iReady and to do their best. Thank you again for sharing your student with us.

Make it a great day!

Smitten Books

Meeker is excited to be hosting a Book Fest! All current and future Meeker families are welcome to come and pick up books on Wednesday, January 22, from 6:00–7:30 p.m.

If you have extra books you would like to exchange or donate to the book fest, please bring them to Meeker or one of our KSD elementary schools before January 20 so we can get them sorted. Books for all ages and languages are welcome, and we need them.

Students from our Peer Mediation class will be there with tips and tricks for emotional well-being. Plus, the Meeker Orchestra will also be performing at the event!

We will also be sharing some stories and a few other literacy activities during the event. Many of the elementary librarians from KSD schools that feed in to Meeker will be at the event, so feel free to come by and say “hi.”

If you have any questions, please email the Meeker Librarian at scott.a.quinn@kent.k12.wa.us

Counselors Corner

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year 2025! Hopefully, you and your student are energized from the holidays and ready to be successful in 2025. This will be a stretch of 6 months before the school year ends. Semester 1 ends on January 23. Your student’s basic schedule will not change except for possible electives. Encourage your students to communicate any questions to teachers so they can be successful in their classes. Ask your student if they have turned in all their missing assignments and are prepared for the end of semester. Help your student practice and review the problems for upcoming quizzes or tests. You can show your student how to take time and not rush while taking a test.

Taking time out for reading every day is crucial for students. You can set up a study system by encouraging your student to read the chapter, be curious about questions, write questions down, and identify new vocabulary words to enhance their language skills.

Feel free to contact your student’s counselor for academic, social or emotional help.

END-OF-SEMESTER ACADEMIC PLAN

With a few weeks to go in the semester, students may be feeling stressed out about their grades. You can help them finish the semester as best they can by taking a few steps together:

1st: Check their grades together with them in Qmlative. Talk about which grades they are satisfied with and which grades they want to improve.

2nd: Check Qmlative and Canvas for missing assignments and announcements about final tests or projects. If there is no information about upcoming assignments in Canvas, have them ask their teacher and report back to you.

3rd: Set goals and create a plan. For example, if they want to improve their math grade from a C to a B, ask them what assignments they need to complete or what grade they need to get on their final exam/project in order to reach that goal. If they don’t know what they need to do, have them share their goal with their teacher and ask how/if it is possible.
