OCTOBER 2025

Principal's Message

Hello Meeker Families,

Thank you to all the families and students who joined us for our Open House and Title One Information! We truly appreciate your involvement and support. If you have any questions about your student’s courses or academic progress, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their teachers and check Qmlativ regularly. We use canvas as the learning platform and use Qmlativ to report on student’s academic progress. Grades in canvas may be different from Qmlativ since some handwritten assignments would not be in the canvas learning platform but may be recorded in your student’s academic progress. Please reference Qmlativ for your student’s grade and reference canvas for supporting students in their learning progression. We value the partnership between home and school and believe it plays a key role in student success.

As we continue into the school year, students are learning and practicing our school expectations and policies. We’re proud of our Meeker students who are setting the BAR—Be Safe, Act Responsibly, Respect Others—and going above and beyond. Keep an eye on your email for notifications when your student earns a Gold BAR for outstanding behavior!

October Focus: Attendance

This month, we’re emphasizing the importance of being on time to class. You can monitor your student’s attendance in Skyward. Here’s a quick guide to the attendance codes:

  • W – Absent from class (entered by the teacher)

  • L – Late to class (within 10 minutes of the start)

  • N – More than 10 minutes late to class

Remember, students have 4-minute passing periods, and music plays during the final 60 seconds as a reminder to head to class.

We’ve launched a fun grade-level competition called the On-Time Incentive System (OTIS) to see which grade has the fewest tardies and which is making the most progress. Ask your student about the OTIS posters around school and find out which grade is in the lead!

Make it a great day!

Dr. Bree Devlin, Meeker Principal

GUARDIANS REQUIRED AT AFTER-SCHOOL EVENTS

Students will only be admitted to away after-school and away sporting events if they are accompanied by a guardian. Students who arrive without a guardian will be turned away at the door. This applies to all KSD middle schools in an effort to keep our campuses safe and manageable during events.

MAMBA COLOR RUN!

color run

We are excited to announce Meeker's first annual ASB Color Run Fundraiser. ASB stands for Associated Student Body, and it is a formal organization of students. ASB funds help to support all students participating in extracurricular activities such as after school sports, cheer team, clubs, school dances, movie nights, other special events, school celebrations, student recognitions, etc. Students will have the opportunity to walk/run the track with their friends, listen to music and get their Color Run T-Shirt sprayed with dye. This fundraiser is a great opportunity for students to bring awareness to the financial need of ASB and help raise monies.

This fundraiser will start at the beginning of October and will end with the color run event on Friday, October 24! So, please keep an eye out for more information and help us raise money for all of our wonderful students here at Meeker!

NO HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

It's Halloween season and we know students are excited to take part in the seasonal fun, but please keep the masks and costumes at home, not at school. During the instructional day any costumes, Halloween masks, ski masks, hoods, wigs, sunglasses or similar items may not be worn on the buses or at school.

Academic Support begins Thursday, October 2!

Academic Support provides students with a quiet space to work on assignments and gives them access to hands-on teacher support in specific subjects. All students are welcome to attend.

Every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:05–5:05 pm in the Meeker Library.

Students will sign in and are expected to work on classwork and other academic content.

Students being picked up do not have to stay the entire time.

Transportation home on the Activity Bus is provided for eligible students at 5:15 pm. Students riding the activity bus must remain at Academic Support or All-Stars until bus pick up.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Studies show a direct correlation between student attendance and student academic performance.

School starts at 8:15 a.m. Breakfast is available to students beginning at 7:45 a.m. in the cafeteria. Please remember that when studfents arrive before school, they must remain in the courtyard or cafeteria, until the bell rings. Students are expected to be in class on time, every period, every day, unless excused by a parent/guardian or staff member. Students arriving more than two hours late or absent for the day cannot participate in after-school activities or sports. Please arrange planned absences, late arrivals, and early dismissals in advance whenever possible.

Picking Up Your Student for Early Dismissal

If you need to pick up your student early, please come to the Main Office. The office will check your ID, ask you to sign your student out, and then contact the classroom to send your student down to the office.

In order to maximize learning time, we will not call your student out of class before you arrive to pick them up. There is no need to call the office ahead of time. If someone else is picking up your student, please let the front office know by calling 253-373-7284 or emailing MKAttendance@kent.k12.wa.us. Please confirm your Emergency Contacts in Skyward Qmlative.

A Good Time for a Grade Check

This is the point in the year when students have had multiple assignments in every class, and thus a pattern of work completion has hopefully been established. If this is not the case, it is still early enough to change course and have a successful semester.

To check your student’s grades, have them log into Qmlativ and show you how they are doing. Now is the time to address any issues before they become insurmountable.
