2nd Quarter Success Plan
If during 1st quarter, your child didn’t get the grade in a class that they wanted, it was likely for one of three reasons: They fell behind the pace of the work and didn’t turn in enough assignments, the class was too difficult (such as being placed in a math class that moved too fast), or an abnormal circumstance arose that disrupted their learning (such as a move or an extended illness). Of these, BY FAR the most common reason is the first one: falling behind and not turning in enough work. If your student struggled to keep up, consider making these changes for second quarter:
Add an additional 15 minutes per day to their home study time. This is not a lot, but it will help them stay on top of work instead of getting a little further behind every day.
Tell them to write one email a week to a teacher explaining what, if anything, is making it difficult for them to succeed in the class.
Check grades with them every week and have them explain any missing work. If they know you are going to check frequently, they are more likely to stay on top of things.

1st Quarter Wrap-Up and Looking Ahead
Dear Parents,
As we wrap up the first quarter, ending on October 31st, our students are eager to see their grades. This is a perfect time to reflect on their progress and set goals for the next quarter. For those who may be feeling a bit anxious about their performance, remember there is always hope! The second quarter is a fresh start, and with a consistent routine, your student can finish strongly.
The Importance of Routines
Establishing a structured routine is vital for academic success. Encourage your child to set aside specific times for homework and study, ensuring they complete assignments on time. A predictable schedule not only helps them manage their workload but also reduces stress and enhances focus.
After School Academic Support
To support our students further, we offer After School Academic Support here at Meeker. This program is an excellent opportunity for students who need extra help. We meet:
Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:00 PM to 5:15 PM
Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (select Saturdays at Meeker Library)
This dedicated time can make a significant difference in your child's understanding and confidence in their studies.
SBIRT Screening for 7th Graders
This month, our 7th graders will participate in the SBIRT Screening on the 4th and the 18th during their science classes. We are implementing a program called Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Services (SBIRT) in all KSD middle schools and select high schools. SBIRT helps identify, reduce, and prevent substance use while supporting our students’ physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Please note that participation in the screener is optional. The results will not be part of your child’s school record, and only the SBIRT Team will have access to this information. While KSD is here to assist with the SBIRT process, any further evaluation or ongoing treatment services will need to be arranged by you, if necessary.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
In addition to academic support, we continue to prioritize our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum. As we move into the second quarter, we will be advancing our first unit, focusing on skills that promote emotional well-being and resilience. This curriculum is essential in helping our students navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Conclusion
As we transition into the second quarter, let’s encourage our students to embrace this new beginning with optimism. By maintaining routines, utilizing available support, and focusing on both academic and emotional growth, they can achieve their goals.
Thank you for your continued partnership in your child’s education! If you have any questions about the SBIRT process or other matters, please feel free to reach out.
